A Summer of Screen Print

I spent some time this summer back in the screen printing studio, working away on one of my long-term projects about taking up space. Taking up space as a female artist; taking up space in the art world using techniques traditionally considered “women’s work” (embroidery, sewing, crochet, dressmaking); taking up space by telling the story of my family’s migration experiences.

Screen printing on fabric to create new pieces - wearable art and soft sculptures - is something I have been planning to do for some time. It was incredible to have this dedicated time to work on this. Screen printing family photos in palettes of fluro pink and red, lilac and ultramarine was like starting my own time capsule of my family’s new life in Australia, reimagined in sherbet tones and neon.

Looking forward to sharing stories of fitting in, standing out, being different and seeing the similarities. All that seems just as relevant today.
